This morning the surf was tiny, but luckily just right to continue to play with my new camera.  The air temp was about 62 the water temp a comfy 68.  The surf was maybe 1-2'.  Here are the best shots from the session.

 I was trying to get the great green as the sun shone through the waves.

 Even with the water on the lens, I like these contrasty shots.

 These last three could be their own mini-series.  I think the shot above might be the best of the bunch this morning.

Two days driving up-island and back before the sunrise sure makes me thankful I don't have to do this commute every day like so many others do.

the great American Elm, revisited

 Recently I got a great email from an arborist up in Maine.  Earlier in the year, Michael would tell me, he was down in my neck of the woods helping with a tree survey conducted every few years for the USDA to scout for the Asian Longhorned Beetle.  Sure enough I totally remember those men and women as they were in the north end of Central Park which was my "office" and climbing trees I had longed to climb for years.  Michael and two other arborists would get to climb this magnificent American elm and so I wanted to show him all three shots I took that day back in March.
Michael, the one I posted before is this first one, slightly cropped, just FYI.  Let me know.

For a brief moment in the morning the sun beams through the buildings along Fifth Avenue creating a spotlight on the Wisteria covered pergola in the central section of the Conservatory Garden in Central Park. What a fabulous visual, fleeting, no photoshop required.

I'm definitely having way too much fun with my new iPhone 4. My first plunge into the world of the "smart phone" and I gotta admit I'm buying the hype. This thing is awesome. Starting the new commute to work, Queens, 6:40am.

Sunrise Series: Astoria, January 27

New York City woke to another fifteen inches of snow this morning. Knowing there's no such thing as a snow day in public horticulture I packed my bag full of calories and keys and coffee and began the pre-dawn trek west towards Manhattan Island. Laid up the last couple days with a shot back, my body was quick to remind me I might not be as mended as I had hoped. No trains came and after long enough that was it. As valiant souls continued to cram the platform I retreated. As I did the sun began to rise.

The emerging sun hitting the faces of the buildings along the avenue shone bright and radiant through the frozen street.
Thanks to the fanciness that is my new iPhone I posted the above pic to the book of faces and named it "Beautiful Nightmare".
They say this is New York's snowiest January on record. Can't argue that one. I paused to appreciate the spruce and London Planetree in front of St. Joe's. Nature: 1, Man: 0
