The genus Crocus:-80 or so species of small, herbaceous perennials
-members of the iris family, Iridaceae
-native in habitats from sea level to subalpine throughout regions of Europe, Africa, and Asia
-all grow via subterranean corms
-majority of species only grow 4-6" tall
-hardiness varies by species, but very generally hardy in Zones 5-9
